Our Unity
Ceremony Process.
There are so many Unity ceremonies that you can incorporate into your wedding to make it unique and custom to you both.
Unity Ceremonies add that perfect, custom touch.
Below is a list of Unity Ceremonies that you can add to your ceremony. If you are unsure how these ceremonies work or are incorporated into your ceremony, just let us know. We are very experienced with these Unities and are happy to explain and even send some example video’s.
Hand Fasting:
The handfasting ceremony has its roots in ancient Celtic tradition and dates as far back as 7000 B.C. In ancient Ireland, when two people chose to be married, they were brought together to have a braided cord or ribbon tied around their hands in the presence of a priest. This act merely acknowledged the pair’s engagement, which typically ran the length of a year.
It was a public declaration of intent to marry, signaling to potential suitors that the woman was intended to her betrothed and not to be harassed.
After the year was up, the couple returned to the priest and either declared their intent to be married or declared that they weren’t a good match. Both would then be free to choose another suitor and bride.
During the ceremony, the officiant or family member will bind the couple’s left hands or right hands with a cord, or fabric. There are several different versions of a Hand fasting, and some even call it “Tying the knot”. Whether a simple hand fasting, or tying of the knot, these ceremonies are sure to add that perfect simple touch to your ceremony.
Unity Candle:
Typically, the mothers of the Bride and groom will walk down the Aisle during the processional, light a taper candle, and then take their seats. During the ceremony, typically after the vows, the couple each takes a taper candle and together lights the center candle. This represents the blending of your two separate lives into one.
Tree Planting:
This is becoming a popular unity ceremony with couples who are blending a family and even couples who have no children yet. A small tree or bush is purchased and during the ceremony, typically after the vows but before the rings, the couple, along with any family members they like, place a little soil, water into the small bush/tree container. After the ceremony, the couple will plant the tree/bush at their home to represent the “putting down of roots”.
Unity Cross:
The unity Cross, or God’s cross, is a cross that comes in 3 parts. During the ceremony, the bride and groom will construct the cross together, this represents the couple not only uniting their lives together but bringing God into their relationship as well.
Strands Of 3 Cords:
“A cord of 3 Strands, is Not quickly broken”.
During the ceremony, the bride and groom will braid 3 strands, typically secured to a board. The cords represent the joining of the bride, the groom and God into a marriage Relationship.
It is based upon the book of Ecclesiastes.
Sand Ceremony:
A Unity Sand ceremony is a popular wedding tradition where the Bride and groom pour different colors of sand into a single vessel. This represents the blending of their separate lives, separate families, and sets of friends into One.
This ceremony can be customized to include family members and children as well.
Each member of the family has a different color of sand and together you all take turns pouring the sand into the empty vessel. There are many different kinds of vessels that you can use, shadow boxes, vases, Urns.
I have even had some families with children use different colors of M&M’s, Crushed glass in different colors (They then had the crushed glass taken to a Glass Blower Artist and he created a custom piece of Art).
Wine Box Ceremony:
In this unique ceremony, the couple will select a box that can hold a bottle of wine or their favorite liquor. They will each write a love letter to the other, not reading what they have written. The letter is sealed in an envelope and during the ceremony, the couple will place the letters, wine in the box and seal the box. The officiant will describe the ceremony and usually, the couple will open the box on their 1st, 5th, or 10th anniversary. They will together, read the letters, drink the wine and remember the beauty of their wedding day.
This ceremony can be customized to include family members and children as well.

Unity Cocktail Ceremony:
This is a fun and easy Unity ceremony for a couple to perform. Together, during the ceremony but usually after the vows or rings, the couple will “Mix” their own favorite cocktail into one glass and each takes a drink. This also has the same meaning as the other ceremonies above, they are working together, creating something together that represents the joining of their 2 separate lives into one.
